A Federal Employer Identification Number (FEIN) is like a Social Security Number for your business. You need one if you have employees, operate as a corporation or partnership, or file certain tax returns.
How to Apply
The easiest way to get a FEIN is to apply online through the IRS website. However, you can also apply by:
- Fax: Send a completed Form SS-4 to the appropriate fax number for your state.
- Mail: Mail Form SS-4 to the IRS service center.
- Telephone: (In limited cases) International applicants can call.
Form SS-4
The application form is the SS-4. It asks for:
- Legal name of the entity.
- Trade name (doing business as).
- Mailing address.
- Type of entity (Sole proprietor, Corporation, LLC, etc.).
- Reason for applying (Started new business, Hired employees, Banking purposes, etc.).
IRS Service Centers
Historically, there were specific regional phone numbers, but the IRS has consolidated operations. The primary method is now the online application at IRS.gov, which provides a number immediately.
